Saint Martins Block, Little Burgundy Montreal – June 15, 1968
The Citizens Committee of Saint Martins Blocks invites residents to attend the breaking ground construction launch of the urban renewal housing in Saint Martins block on June 15th at 10:00 am. In celebration of the long awaited construction launch, the community will host a parade and give speeches regarding the Urban Renewal Housing. It is important that the Government of Montreal see face to face the lives of the people that they have intruded upon and disrupted in order to undertake their Urban Renewal project. The citizens committee is passionate in ensuring that the residents affected by relocation are properly cared for. The people of Saint Martins Block must have a say in the conditions of the new housing. Mrs. Jeanne Leblanc, president of the Citizens Committee of Saint Martins Blocks, will speak alongside the chairman executive committee of Montreal to represent the people of Saint Martins Blocks and continue in cooperation with the government in hopes to achieve decent living conditions within the Urban Renewal project.
Mrs. Jeanne Leblanc, president of the Saint Martins Blocks Citizens Committee, has experienced first hand the struggles of the expropriation and wishes to represent the people of Saint Martins Blocks. She fights for the right to participate in the plans of the Urban Renewal Housing. Mrs. Leblanc has participated in the achievement of several committee actions starting from November 1966 all the way to upcoming events such as the Breaking Ground Construction Launch. The Saint Martins Block Citizens Committee is excited to announce Mrs. Jeanne Leblanc as a keynote speaker of the Breaking Ground Construction Launch. Mrs. Leblanc proudly argues that “the residents should have an equal voice in its administration and that the citizens committee hopes that this will lead to Urban renewal that is not only physical but human”.
The Citizens Committee of Saint Martins Blocks consists of residents of the Little Burgundy District of Montreal that encourage all locals to fight for a voice in the planning of the Urban Renewal. The Citizens Committee formed an official association in 1967 making the rights of the residents known during the expropriation of Saint Martins Blocks. The goal of the citizens committee is to influence the decision making of the living conditions for the new housing. It is important that the people have a say in the decisions which affect their lives. The Citizens Committee believes that there must be joint management of residents and the government concerning the expropriation, relocation, and the urban renewal housing plans.
